So here it is… The obligatory 2010 in a nutshell post. The post where I look back on the year that has been and say some stuff about it… It’s been a year like most others, some good stuff happened, some bad stuff happened, some really crappy stuff happened. Most importantly I think I actually learned some really important lessons about life and friendship this year. I’ll probably relearn the lessons again next year because that’s how people are, but right now, I’m kinda happy about it all
So what happened in 2010? Deep breath… Here we go:
And I think that was most of the highlights…
OK, it’s true, right now South Africans everywhere are riding high on the crest of an extremely proudly South African wave! We have just spent an amazing month showing the world what we do best, hosting a damn good party as well as the world’s biggest international sporting event, the FIFA World Cup. So you can be forgiven for thinking that I am going to be extra positive about this film purely because of the South Africaness of it… Well I won’t be! I’m going to be extra positive about it because I thoroughly enjoyed it as film!
Those who know me will tell you that I can be a real girl a lot of the time… but for some reason I LOVE action films! I really enjoy guns, explosions, special effects and, of course, the occasional Yippee Ki-yay. District 9 was exactly what I expected and wanted it to be and it was made in South Africa, starring South Africans and made mostly by South Africans, so it’s even better. This film had all the right elements for a Sci-Fi action film and it had some really wonderful comic moments. It did have a very strong moral message which is reasonably standard for Sci-Fi, about segregation and acceptance. The wonderful thing is, this film doesn’t whack you over the head with the message which is all too common in South African films. Usually our films are all about Apartheid and the guilt that goes along with it. District 9 allows you to ignore the message, you can leave your brain outside and just enjoy the film and the message is still there in the background.
I absolutely loved District 9!!! Go and watch it. And if you have already, watch it again
On Saturday 03 July 2010, I joined everyone and their uncle in Cape Town to do the Fan Walk. What a day out!?!
I have never before danced in the streets, and have never before been in a crowd that was so full of goodwill and cheer. The entire Fan Walk was packed with 100s of 1000s of people and everyone was there to just soak up the atmosphere. And boy was there atmosphere!
I just want to say a huge thank you and well done to my home town – Cape Town! You did us proud! Everyone was dressed up, everyone was smiling, the police were very present but also very pleasant and no one seemed to be in a bad mood.
Cape Town – We felt it! It was here! “Waka waka! Eh Eh!”
